About Us

LCpl Jeffery Adam Bishop Det. 1491

On April 19 2022, as a memorial to LCpl Jeffery Adam Bishop, Detachment 1491 applied for charter with the Marine Corps League and was approved on July 1 and officially accepted on September 17, 2022.

LCPL Jeffrey Adam Bishop

Born and raised locally, LCPL Jeffrey Adam Bishop, affectionately known as Adam, joined the Marine Corps shortly after graduating from Dickson High School. While serving his country in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2007, Adam paid the ultimate sacrifice when his barracks came under attack. He left behind his family, friends, and high school sweetheart after just 6 months of marriage. We honor his memory of steadfast determination and dedication by supporting our veterans, their families, and the surrounding communities.

The POW / MIA Table

Missing man table.jpeg
POW MIA Table.jpeg

This table is reserved to honor our missing comrades in arms.

The table is small, symbolizing the frailty of a prisoner against his oppressors. It is round, showing our everlasting concern for our missing brothers and sisters.

The tablecloth is white, symbolizing the purity of their intentions to respond to their country's call to arms

A single rose reminds us of the families and loved ones who keep faith, awaiting their return.

The vase is tied with a red ribbon representing our commitment to account for those still  missing

A lemon is placed on the bread plate to remind us of their bitter fate.

The salt on the plate is symbolic of the tears shed by those who wait for the return of the missing

The glass is inverted because they cannot toast with us

The chair is empty because they are not here with us

What We Do

We Serve Veterans and Our Community.  Below are some of the things we do throughout the year.

Suicide Awarness

Serving in the military is hard, and Suicide is a major problem within our Veteran Community.  We support many organizations that help raise awareness and have programs to help people struggling with it.  If, through our efforts, we help at least one Veteran, we are helping.  If you need help, please reach out. People care about you, no matter how dark it may seem.

Young Marines

The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages eight through high school graduation. Our mission is to strengthen the lives of America’s youth by promoting the mental, moral, and physical development of young people.  They were founded by the Marine Corps League in 1959.

We help fundraise for the Young Marines to provide them with equipment, uniforms, and the resources to carry out their mission.

Christmas Care Packages

We fundraise to make an impact in Veterans' lives, and one of those ways is by shopping for Veterans in nursing homes in the Fairview and Dickson, Tennessee area.  The little things make a big impact, and we love being able to help them out throughout the year, especially during the holidays.

Parades

Getting out in our communities is important to our mission to help Veterans and our Communities.  Letting Veterans and families see us and know that we are there to support them goes a long way.

Scholarships

We provide scholarships to local schools through the Marine ROTC, the Young Marines Foundation, the Semper Fi Fund, the Navy / Marine Corps Relief Society, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, and other foundations that support local people and veterans.

Wreaths & Flag Placements

Honoring and remembering our veterans in their final resting spot is important for their families and our community.  These veterans served our country, and we understand and respect all they did for our country, so these wreath and flag placements are the little things we can do to show our support.

Veteran Events

We attend Local Middle Tennessee Veteran Events to show our support for our Veterans and the Community, along with helping connect Veterans.

Veteran Funeral Assistance

This detachment does not currently provide a funeral detail. If you are a family member of a fallen Marine, please contact us, and we can help you through the process.  We have also provided a link to the National HQ, which can better serve your needs, as well as to some of the other armed forces.

Support Scouting America

We support Scouting America by awarding the Marine Corps League Good Citizen Award to Eagle Scouts in our area.

Supporting Retired Veterans

There are many veterans in our local retirement homes.  We work with those facilities to schedule visits and events.  We want to be there to help them however we can, from just talking to our annual Christmas Gift shopping.

Support ROTC

We support our local ROTC units with donations and assistance when needed.  We know that many of these students will become service members and eventually veterans, so we want to be there to share more of the story, especially about the Marine Corps.

Fairview High School

Hickman County High School

Support Local Sports

We support multiple sports teams and fields around our area with donations to help support those activities for young people.  We understand the commitment that the participants have to compete, along with the dedication of their parents.

Support Local Initiatives

We support local initiatives in our communities and help with veterans’ programs.  Simply, we want to help our local community be a better place.  We have also helped individual community members and families in need.

Support the
Marine Corps League

We work with the Tennessee Department of the Marine Corps League and participate in regional and national Marine Corps League Conferences.  This is a great time to learn more about what others are doing and the impact they are making on their communities, on the lives of veterans, and on the Marine Corps.

We Meet and Eat

Last but not least, we meet each month to discuss the previous month and plan for the next.  During these meetings, we talk, connect, and learn about what's going on with each member and their family.  We learn how connected we are with many serving overseas at the same time and in the same places, and had the same jobs and the same duty stations.  We want to be a Marine Corps League Family.  We want to be there for our members and their families in those times of need.
